Chapter Twelve
I watch as Mason walks down the stairs to his waiting limo, and just as they pull away from the curb, I hear an angry curse just down the block. I look over to see Roman as he hangs up his phone and strides toward his SUV.
âWhatâs wrong?â I ask.
âMarkus was spotted by a camera in south Chicago,â Roman answers. âOnly about half a mile from the cemetery.â
âShit,â I breathe. And without thinking, I cross to Romanâs car and climb right in the passenger seat. âDo you have anyone in the area?â I ask when he gets in the driverâs seat and buckles, revving the engine to life.
âNo,â he answers. âHad no reason to think there was a need until now.â He lays harder on the gas, gunning it through the quiet streets. Iâm thankful itâs three in the morning. Otherwise, weâd be mowing down pedestrians left and right.
âJust how bad was it?â I ask as I brace myself when he takes a sharp turn. âWhen Archer was here before?â
âHe laid low for a few months when he first arrived,â Roman answers. âWe just thought he had a lot of gifted friends. We didnât realize they were devout followers. No one thought too much of it when the first gifted was found dead. Itâs Chicago, after all.â He makes another hard turn, and then hits the gas, running through a red light with a thankfully empty intersection. âBut then there were three more found just a week later. And these werenât low level gifted. They were more powerful ones, ones who should probably have been able to defend themselves.â
âBut all Archer had to do was touch them, and he had an army of followers,â I observe.
Roman nods. âIt wasnât until the Godfreyâs father witnessed Archer doing what he did that we realized it was him, what he could do. Archer went after him, and Edward Godfrey spent two weeks in some kind of coma. So, that was even more time until we knew it was him. Over the course of a few months, he tore through dozens of gifted, killing every single one of them.â
I curse under my breath and watch the city whip by as Roman flies through the streets.
âDo you think you could do it?â Roman asks. His gaze shifts over to me, and even though his eyes arenât on the road, I know weâre in no danger of him wrecking the car, not with his vampire instincts. Iâm pretty sure I could drive this thing with my eyes closed. âIf you were to find him? Could you kill Archer King?â
My heart hammers hard in my chest. Romanâs question implies that a man who has been dead for five years could come back. Heâs talking about the man who killed my mother.
My hesitation must be answer enough, because Roman looks away, looking slightly disgusted and disappointed.
âWe do whatever it takes to protect the ones we care about, Juliet,â he says. âFind someone to care about.â
I want to spit back, tell him I care about people.
