Chapter Twelve

I watch as Mason walks down the stairs to his waiting limo, and just as they pull away from the curb, I hear an angry curse just down the block. I look over to see Roman as he hangs up his phone and strides toward his SUV.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“Markus was spotted by a camera in south Chicago,” Roman answers. “Only about half a mile from the cemetery.”

“Shit,” I breathe. And without thinking, I cross to Roman’s car and climb right in the passenger seat. “Do you have anyone in the area?” I ask when he gets in the driver’s seat and buckles, revving the engine to life.

“No,” he answers. “Had no reason to think there was a need until now.” He lays harder on the gas, gunning it through the quiet streets. I’m thankful it’s three in the morning. Otherwise, we’d be mowing down pedestrians left and right.

“Just how bad was it?” I ask as I brace myself when he takes a sharp turn. “When Archer was here before?”

“He laid low for a few months when he first arrived,” Roman answers. “We just thought he had a lot of gifted friends. We didn’t realize they were devout followers. No one thought too much of it when the first gifted was found dead. It’s Chicago, after all.” He makes another hard turn, and then hits the gas, running through a red light with a thankfully empty intersection. “But then there were three more found just a week later. And these weren’t low level gifted. They were more powerful ones, ones who should probably have been able to defend themselves.”

“But all Archer had to do was touch them, and he had an army of followers,” I observe.

Roman nods. “It wasn’t until the Godfrey’s father witnessed Archer doing what he did that we realized it was him, what he could do. Archer went after him, and Edward Godfrey spent two weeks in some kind of coma. So, that was even more time until we knew it was him. Over the course of a few months, he tore through dozens of gifted, killing every single one of them.”

I curse under my breath and watch the city whip by as Roman flies through the streets.

“Do you think you could do it?” Roman asks. His gaze shifts over to me, and even though his eyes aren’t on the road, I know we’re in no danger of him wrecking the car, not with his vampire instincts. I’m pretty sure I could drive this thing with my eyes closed. “If you were to find him? Could you kill Archer King?”

My heart hammers hard in my chest. Roman’s question implies that a man who has been dead for five years could come back. He’s talking about the man who killed my mother.

My hesitation must be answer enough, because Roman looks away, looking slightly disgusted and disappointed.

“We do whatever it takes to protect the ones we care about, Juliet,” he says. “Find someone to care about.”

I want to spit back, tell him I care about people.
